I am an Alterntive Health Practitioner as well as being enrolled in the Hypnotherapy program in Toronto. I want to start my own practice or join an existing one in the Ottawa, Ontario area. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Marie

I just came on board, and have spent the morning reading past posts. Builing a practice is different than setting up a business. If you are still trying to build your practice I would invite you to email me. Three years ago I successfully built a full practice within six months and have now begun helping others in the healing arts professions to do the same with marked success. I would welcome the opportunity to talk with you and see how what I did might fit with your need.

Katherine Zimmerman at her www.trancetime.com site has an excellent book on building a practice. It is also the subject of recent thread in alt.hypnosis. Wendi Fresen (sp) has a group called hypnomasterminds on Yahoo that is focused on marketing. I am not sure from the post what type of alternative health practice you have but as you know the world is not lining up outside of your door. Shamless self promotion is key to success. First, get a book on starting small business as every small business has common items.. Make sure you have the proper paperwork and find out what your local regulations on hypnosis might be. Second, write a plan. Include a budget, figure out what you need to break even and all of that. After determining your budget, visit the above reference and figure out how to run a marketing budget on shoestring. Many people forget to use the phone but calling potential referral sources can be great way to get the word out. Oh, figure out if you have mild to bad case of call reluctance and then get over it. Self hypnosis is one of the best ways to do this. Also read some books on selling, cold calling and just get hungry.

Marie, from your post, you are involved in more than Hypnosis, is that correct? If so, you have a conflict, and you may find it difficult to find clients for any of them. You will need to investigate the market of course. Find a location that is both suitable, and economical, and have enough money to keep you afloat until business builds, about five years or so.
