I have read a little bit about the Stein Clenched-Fist technique for conditioning positive feelings. Has anybody used this technique extensively in their own practice? If so, does anyone have detailed instructions on how to impliment it? I am considering using it as a stress management technique for a client, but am uncomfortable attempting it without a more detailed example of how to implement it.

Your book learnin' is beyond mine. Is this just a fancy name for a physical anchor to a conditioned emotional response?

I have never heard of Stein-Clenched fist technique. Often,hypnotists put a twist on an existing technique then add their name to it in order to gain name recognition.

I guess it is just another name for a physical anchor to an emotional response.

The technique involves having someone clench their fist as they imagine a scene that evokes positive emotions. They can also clench their OTHER fist while imagining a series of stressful scenes. After training it supposedly allows for a quick reexperiencing of the positive emotion in times of need.

Then yes, but I have been using a finger-tap technique, or sometimes the sensation of a very deep breathe. Easier and less obtrusive for clients to do when out in public. And then a 'stop-sign' thing for 'reaching type' habits.

When they have sufficient depth, have them create a visualization or memory that has the targeted good emotion with it. Then build up the emotion further... give the emotion a physical sensation, color, texture, whatever helps the person recognize the feeling. Then have them create a physical sensation to anchor it to... A finger tap, deep breathe clenched fist. Reinforce that a couple times and make sure they practice it several times a day to keep it's effectiveness.

For reaching type habits, like the simple reaching component of smoking, food snacking, hair pulling, skin picking, etc.. With them in depth, both hands on opposite chair armrests. Have them imagine the physical sensation of the arm they use to reach, just beginning to reach, just before it starts when the muscles start to twitch and move, shoulder, arm, wrist, hand, fingers, imagine a red color to those muscles as they start to move. Build up that sensation, then gently tap on the top of that hand.

Then stop tapping on that hand and start on the other and say something like "imagine a big red stop sign, like it were painted on the inside of your forehead. big red stop sign" and build that up. Then back to the other hand, reaching, muscles, physical sensation of the reach just beginning, red tingling.. blah blah.
Then back to the stop sign hand. Go back and forth maybe 5 times building up the feelings, then, quickly go to the reaching hand, start tapping and say "stop sign, big red stop sign" then to the stop sign hand and say "reaching". build those both up maybe 3 or 4 times.

That last one works very well for 'most' people for several days.

This is excellent, thank you very much. How important is achieving a deep trance state to this process? Is it something that could work as a general stress management technique without induction? I am not experienced enough with hypnosis to want to attempt it with a client if the trance is integral (I was hoping that I could achieve the same sort of results using relaxation and visualization, interventions in which I am experienced and comfortable).

I appreciate your advice!

You may get some effect with out trance, but it will be much more reliable the closer you get to somnambulism. Difference between hypnotherapy and traditional therapy :)

Again, I appreciate your advice and experience. I think I will work harder to seek out formal hypnosis training so that I can supplement and improve the stress and coping work that I'm already trained in.
