Hi there

This is my first post and I would like to say I have got some fabulous information already from various sources.

I have been interested in getting involved in the industry for a few years now and was keen to train last year. However I was put off by an anxiety I have myself about triggering mental diseases such as schizophrenia, and if this is possible?

My mother suffers with the condition and it is unclear whether it is a trait which can run in families or not. But also, if a a client with emotional issues has an underlying mental condition can this manifest as a result of Hypnotherapy?

I would like to become involved with the techniques of suggestive hypnotherapy to help with phobias and weight loss, and although investigative hypnotherapy interests me, I am worried about the vulnerable position it could put the therapist in.

Any advise on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Hello GeeGenie,

I've never seen or heard of anyone ever having "triggered a mental disease" that was not previously active.

The very worst case, if hypnosis techniques are not done correctly (or the client is dishonest about their issues) is exacerbating existing/known/manifesting issues. If this happens it can be re-stabilized with hypnosis.

Thanks Patrick

That has eased some of my anxiety. I suppose as long as I have the right support group then everything can be talked through and resolved.

I think the best thing to do would be to get the training and take it all in bite sized chunks.

Much appreciated

If this destabilization was from on line quack hypnosis where/who could re-stabilize the individual?

I have been working as a full-time hypnotherapist for 13 years and have never once had an experience where the client was made worse by the work that I have been doing. It's important that you get good training so that you know how to handle different issues, as well as abreactions that could occur with the client. However, hypnotherapy is not going to make somebody schizophrenic it doesn't induce mental disorders, and in fact, it can help people overcome mental disorders

I agree with Linda. It is not actually possible for Hypnotherapy to create a mental health disorder. When you are qualified as a Hypnotherapist, you are qualified to help people feel better. However, people with psychosis should not use hypnotherapy that involves working with parts of the mind. You will be able to see from medications on an intake form and your initial assessment if your client has psychosis. The only health profession that can treat such clients is a Psychiatrist.

If your client is 'normal' and doesn't have psychosis, then you can only be of assistance.

Like patrikg, "I've never seen or heard of anyone ever having "triggered a mental disease" that was not previously active." But being fairly new to self-hypnosi, I use a lot of common sense when discussing, and sharing techniques. A person needs to be aware of who is asking and what is the goal they are seeking. Anyone that seems a little "toxic" with their purpose in mind, I would back off and suggest a pro. There is nothing wrong suggesting a professional. Actually, you probably will be thanked for good advice.
