I've been practicing hypnosis for 5 years now and I have made remarkable changes in my life. However, the last 2 years I have developed resistance to hypnosis. I'm not able to use anchoring and cannot really drift into trance when myself or someone else hypnotises me. It is like my body rebels against anything that could change my current situation. I believe that I might a hold a belief which is so strong that doesn't let anything go into my mind. No matter how hard I try I can't find what this belief is. I even have resistance to hypnotherapists too so going to a therapist is not a guarantee that I will be helped.
Has anyone have a similar experience and what did you do to overcome it?

Hi Helena,

I've experienced similar. As a hypnotherapist I always found it difficult to accept the suggestions of other hypnotherapists and found I developed a really intense itching in my face which distracted me from the relaxation. I also found that I was so busy analysing their techniques I would forget to experience them.

In order to overcome this I personally saw a life coach which while in some ways is similar to hypnotherapy and NLP is also still different enough for me to not have any excuses to not listen. The coaching basically prepped me to work on what I wanted to work on and was basically the back door to unconscious change. Now enjoy hypnotherapy without reservation.

Maybe try a different technique or modality to ready your mind to change?

Hi Helena,
Sounds like you have resistance because you know you are being hypnotized or being suggested for a change. I am not sure, as I am still learning this art at present, but I think a well experienced NLP practitional can help you with any indirect approach so that your limiting belief should not interfere in the process.

Hi Sammohan,

When I started realising that I'm resisting hypnosis, some bad things were happening in my life at the same time. Everything started when I made a list with all the things I want in my life and I started working towards achieving them. One of them was to feel very confident when dating men. I managed with anchoring to be feeling very confident and met this man I really liked and I wouldn't believe I could be with him if I was not in a confident state constantly. It ended up really bad and i came to believe that what I wanted to achieve in life is not the right one and even If I am in the state ''miracles can happen" or ''confidence'' mode doesn't mean that what comes in my life is the right one and it might cause more pain in the end. However, this realisation hasn't really taken my resistance away. I'm also resistant to therapists as I feel that none would be able to change me or nobody is good enough to change my mind as I know all the NLP tricks. Fear of failure, control issues, low confidence are my issues. I may feel that I can achieve and get results only If i am in a confidence state and I feel desperate now that my tools of making me feel confident do not work and I don't let anyone to help me resolving my resistance.

I always prefer therapy, but If you have tried your best to resolve your issues with therapy, then i think it's time to try a completely new approach to get a new result. May be psychiatry can help you.
Though it may not take away your resistance but if you have some specific issues like lack of self confidence, social anxiety, etc. then drugs are helpful.
I used drugs for study related problem. It worked but it also made me social and confident as I wasn't social by nature and i had hesitation while meeting with new people. My psychiatrist said he had prescribed me antidepressants. So now i know that depression was the root cause of my antisocial nature and hesitation. I can't say about yours, but what i am saying is that you may try drugs along with therapy for better results.

Well, this is a suggestion but not psychiatry is not for me. I'm against any form of drugs. I strongly believe that the root of all diseases are negative emotions.

Question is, how long do effects of hypnosis last and what determines this success? My resistance may come from the fact (or not) that hypnotic effects do not last or i had to address my needs first before I introduced myself a new pattern of behaviour. (Thinking out loud now..)

I also have problems going into a trance, I can get really relaxed, and I do mean relaxed. But im always able to open my eyes despite the therapist saying i cant. Just to let you know I have not been to a hypnotherapist in person, but I have tried hundreds of videos and methods it seems. You might say well you cant always remember a trance, not true I remember lots of them. an example is one night, I was watching rain drops hit water puddle and a street was shining on it. I remember the whole thing, things turned white, I could hear the rain very vividly, I remember my mind was totally clear and at peace. The problem is, im not able to do that anymore.
