I have been trying to hypnotise myself using various techniques but have been unable. I have tried using professional tapes and have even tryed reading scripts that i have downloaded from the internet on to a tape and playing them back. Every time i get to the part when i am supposed to be in a trance i just think to myself 'No im not' and i wake up. I think it is impossible for me to be hypnotised. I have a phobia of spiders i want to get rid of before my son picks up the phobia from me. Anybody any ideas what i can do.

Have you done any work on understanding hypnosis, and learning what the state is actually like? Many people are under misconceptions that when they are in hypnosis that everything will be different. They won't be aware of what's going on around them, they won't hear anything and numerous other falsehoods that abound in the world of hypnosis.
By saying, 'No I'm no' is pulling yourself out of hypnosis, though only you can judge if you ever entered the state or not. If you want an idea of what hypnosis is like then here is one approach to use for a simple method.
Start by giving yourself the suggestion that when you open and close your eyes that you'll double the state of relaxation that you have, and each time you do this it will double again and again. Want it to happen, and expect that it will happen and you will find that it does.
Close your eyes, and imagine that you're unable to open them. Start with the idea that you want them to just not work at all, and then test them so that they just won't open. In the back of your mind you'll probably be saying, "Hey, I can open my eyes anytime I want to." Put those messages aside, and when you're done testing them just let that relaxation you feel around your eyes just drop all the way down to the tips of your toes.
Open and close your eyes now, and let the relaxation double, and feel it move down to the tips of your toes. Repeat this two or three times.
That's all there is to it, I'm suggesting this as it will give you an idea of what you will be experiencing as I'm not sure what you expected to experience.
On a side note, I wouldn't be terribly concerned that your son will pick up your phobia. You don't generally inheirit phobias from y our parents. They are generally as a result of something else, usually trauma.

First, you can rest assured is that you are hypnotizable, otherwise you wouldn't have that phobia in the first place.

Second, there are many different ways to use self-hypnosis and a lot of them do not involve hypnosis recordings.

Third, the fastest technique for getting rid of your phobia of spides would most probably be an NLP Fast Phobia Cure. It generally removes phobias in about 5 minutes (that's why it's called "fast").
