I want to be able to do self hypnosis.

I am looking for an experienced hypnotherapist who can do instant hypnosis or non verbal/kineasthetic inductions (ala Richard Bandler). These are the only 2 methods I have not tried. All other methods fail to take me into hypnosis/trance.

I want the hypnotherapist to get me into trance and see if there is anything in my subconscious stopping me going into trance or does not want to do trance for any reason (or is that a stupid contradiction?). I then want to be given post hypnotic suggestions to help me go into trance in the future.

I have been to a few hypnotherpists. The methods I have tried so far are :-

Dave Elman

Double induction

Progressive relaxation

Story induction

Confusion technique

Eye fixation

Handshake interrupt

Various self hypnosis CD's, tapes, videos and DVD's

Whenever I do hypnosis or self hypnosis I find it impossible to switch of my conscious mind. Instead of relaxing and listening to what is being said I am thinking of mundane things like what I am going to eat for tea or if I am going out for a drink at the weekend etc.

Now the most popular question will be "How do I know I am not going into trance?"

Well here is where I contradict myself. I have been into a very very deep hypnotic trance but only once. Ever since then I have been unable to go into trance.

I have also been studying hypnosis and NLP. Maybe if I explain my sessions so far it will help

Spring 2003. I went for stop smoking session in Liverpool. Did not go into trance. No pre-hypnosis talk was done. No attempt at rapport was done. I had a cigarette 2 minutes after leaving the office.

Started studying and reading about hypnosis via the net.

Jan 2004. found a hypnosis forum. Explained my stop smoking session did not work and asked for advice. Was told my hypnotherpists was probably not very good and look for a good one.

I then done some research and found a hypnotherapist with a good reputation.

Feb 2004. I went to hypnotherapist to stop smoking. No attempt at rapport or hypnosis pre-talk was done but I went into a very very deep trance. I had only had 3 hours sleep though and was very tired (would that matter?). I went so deep in this session I do not remember one bit of the stop smoking script and I only remember the first third to half of the induction. A progressive relexation/story method was used. I was so deep (and because I was so tired) I actually thought I fell asleep. I realised this could not be true as I would not of heard the hypnotherapist say "6, 7, 8, wake up feeling relaxed, alert etc.
So the only thing I remember from this session is the first third of the induction then I got amnesia then I remember hearing 6, 7, and 8, wake up. I stopped smoking for good. I never ever think about having or needing a cigarette in any situation. It is like I have always been a non smoker rather than feeling like an ex smoker.

March 2004. I went back to the same hypnotherpapist for an exam stress/memory session. The precise same method of induction was used as in the stop smoking session. However I did not go into trance. Not even a very light trance (2nd session syndrome?)

Late march 2004. Went on a 2 day hypnosis course in London. The course was run by a famous UK hypnotherapist. We learnt story/progressive relaxation induction, eye fixation and the Dave Elman. Although we practised on each other a lot and with different people I did not go onto trance once.

April 2004. I went back to the same hypnotherapist who done the stop smoking and exam stress sessions. Explained beforehand how I went very deep in the stop smoking session but did not go into trance for the exam session. I was told that was normal for some people. I asked if he could use a different method. I asked for a rapid or instant induction. He e-mailed back saying that may not be suitable but he would change the method. When I arrived for the session I was very upset to find to find out what he meant by changing the method was change the induction script. He still used a progressive relaxation/story script method. I did not go into trance. Not even a light trance.

June 2005. I went on a 6 day hypnosis course. It was pretty basic. We only really learnt one method of induction (progressive relaxation/story). We did learn some things on what to do once hypnosis was obtained, checking for hypnosis etc. I did not into trance once during the 6 days.

June 2005. I went for a hypnosis session with one of the course instructors from the 6 day hypnosis course. The aim of the session was to get me into trance and see if there is anything stopping me going into trance by questioning my subconscious. Same boring story method induction we learnt on the course was used. No attempt at questioning my subconscious was attempted (maybe the teacher/hypnotherapist knew I was not in trance so did not try to question my subconscious?). I did not go into trance.

Sept 2004. I went on a 5 day hypnosis course run by a very famous hypnotherapist/stage hypnotist. A very famous man from the world of NLP was also there. Inductions learnt were a variation on the Dave elman, progressive relaxation, story, handshake interrupt and the double induction. Even though we practised on each other a lot I did not go into trance during the 5 days. At one point I was up on stage getting hypnotised by the famous hypnotherapist but I did not go into trance.

Oct 2004. I got in touch with another hypnotherapist who also had skills in NLP, TFT, EFT, acupuncture etc. I explained my problems/issues. I explained what I wanted out of the session. I went for the session. A very small pre-hypnosis talk was done and then a confusion method/script was used. Before the session I had asked for a rapid induction or instant induction to be used. I foretold the hypnotherapist I had tried confusion and it does not work for me. Even though I requested that the hypnotherapist try and question my subconscious to see if I have any issues with hypnosis no attempt was made (again did the hypnotherapist realise I was not in trance so did not try to question my subconscious?) No attempt at post hypnotic suggestion for re-entering trance was done. After the so called trance session a very bad attempt at EFT was done.

In between all of this I have listened to and watched many different self hypnosis CD's, tapes, videos and DVD's. They are from various hypnotherapist. None of them take me into trance.

Possible reasons stopping me going into trance?

Second trance syndrome

I am expecting too much (although I do understand depth of trance means nothing and that any trance light or heavy is good)

The inability to turn of my conscious mind and stop it from chattering/thinking.

My knowledge of knowing how all the various methods of induction work.

I am too analytical and I am trying to work out all the bits of the induction method as it is being done on me.

There is something in my subconscious or another part of me that does not like hypnosis/going into trance.

The stop smoking session when I went into my one and only very deep trance and got amnesia. I think this session may be the culprit on stopping me going back into hypnosis. Just before I went into the deep trance and got the amnesia I remember hearing a floorboard creak. This panicked me (but strangely did not stop me going into or bring me out of trance?). The reason I panicked is just before I closed my eyes the hypnotherapist was sitting down. He looked like he would be sitting down all through the session. When I heard the floorboard creak I got worried. I remember thinking "What is he up to?" but I consciously remember nothing else after panicking and thinking what is he up to. I know he would have done nothing unethical and the creaking floorboard was probably nothing but does my subconscious mind know that? Is the panicking then not remembering anything after that playing on my mind?

When I went for my stop smoking session the hypnotherapist would allow 2 people per session. I tried to get one of my mates to come along so the price would be halved. When I asked my mates one of them said "What if he gets you under and tries to shag you arse?" Now the comment was said as 50% joke and 50% serious comment. Now I know from what I have learnt from studying hypnosis this simply could not happen but does my subconscious know that? We all know how illogical the subconscious mind can be. Also one of the main functions subconscious is to protect us. Maybe my subconscious thinks that by preventing hypnosis it is protecting me in some way?

As you can guess I have so far spent a lot of money on trying to solve this issue. If I am going to spend even more money with a different hypnotherapist I want to be sure he or she can help me. I am no longer putting up with a promise of help only to find the hypnotherapist uses a progressive script or a confusion method. As I have already said these methods fail to induce trance in me.

I have also had a lot of hypnotherapist tell me that maybe I am unhypnotisable. So I tell them how I once went a very deep amnesia trance but have never been able to go into trance since and they tell me that maybe I am unhypnotisable. Amazing. Maybe it is that they are not good at what they do? I believe if done correctly ANYBODY can be hypnotised.

I can not think of conscious reason(s) why I would not want to do hypnosis so it must be in my subconscious. I have just started learning auto questioning using a chevrel pendulum. So far I have got it to tell me that there is something stopping me going into hypnosis but when I try and find out what it is, when it happened etc I can not get past do not want to answer. I have tried rephrasing the questions, giving my subconscious mind time to answer etc.

Now with all what I have said and my contradictions is there anybody who can help me? I really want to be able to go into trance both with a hypnotherapist and using self hypnosis.

Recently I have tried listening to a double induction CD I have made. I use a script that I wrote that tries to use direct commands, choice and linguistic binds. After the double indction is finished I here the following script.


I know my body is relaxed deeply and I may want to relax my mind that deeply. My mind may become too tired to even think. From now on and in the future I may find the more I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis the more deeply in trance I will go or I may find the more I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis the more deeply relaxed I am able to become. I may find that when I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis the more I relax the deeper into hypnosis I will go or the more into hypnosis I go the deeper I will relax. I may find every time I do hypnosis I will go deeper and deeper into trance until I reach the level that is just right for me.


From now on and in the future I may find the more I relax the deeper into hypnosis I will go or I may find the more into hypnosis I go the deeper into relaxation I will go. Picture yourself in a deep hypnotic trance. Double that picture in size. Make that picture brighter. Make the colours more vivid. I am able to go into a deep hypnotic trance.

From now on and in the future I may find whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis the more I relax the deeper into hypnosis I will go or I may find the more deeper into hypnosis I go the more deeply I will relax.

From now on and in the future I may find that whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I can easily go into a deep relaxation or I may find that whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I can easily go into a deep relaxation. I may find that is easy to stop all conscious thinking and just listen with my aubconscious mind or I may find it easy to just listen with my subconscious mind and stop all conscious thinking.

From now on and in the future I may find that whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I will find it easy to switch off my conscious mind and just let My subconscious mind listen or I may find that from now on whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I my may find that my conscious mind automatically switches itself off and lets My subconscious mind listen. I may find all conscious thoughts will just fade away or I may find that I just don’t want to think with my conscious mind. I may find that whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I have no need to consciously think of anything or I may find I simply do not want to think I just want to listen with My subconscious mind. I may find it will be easy to just let My conscious mind relax and stop all conscious thinking or I may find it will be easy to stop all conscious thinking and just let My subconscious mind listen. I may find that whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis the more I try to consciously think the more I will be unable to do so or I may find I simply just don’t want to consciously think.

From now on and in the future I may find that to get the full benefits of the hypnosis sessions I will want do hypnosis or self hypnosis once a day or I may find that to get the full benefits of the hypnosis sessions I will want to do hypnosis or self hypnosis twice per day or I may find I may only want to do hypnosis or self hypnosis three or four times per week. How many times per day or week is up to myself. It is my choice.

Hypnosis is a good thing. I may find hypnosis is simply a very enjoyable relaxing experience with My conscious mind switched off and my subconscious mind listening or I may find hypnosis is a very enjoyable deep trance with my subconscious mind listening and my conscious mind switched off. I may find hypnosis will help me change my life for the better. From now on I may find I can easily go into a deep hypnotic trance or I may find I can easily go onto a really deep deep hypnotic trance. From now on I may find I am able to easily go into a deep relaxation or I may find I can easily go into a really deep deep relaxation.

From now on and in the future I whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I may find my conscious mind automatically switches itself off and lets my subconscious listen or I may find my subconscious mind listens and switches my subconscious mind off. I may find that any other noises inside or outside the building I just relax me even more or I may find any noises outside or inside the building take me deeper into trance.

I may find that from now on whenever I practice any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I will find it easy to go into a deep deep hypnotic trance or I may find whenever I practice any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I will find it easy to go into a deep deep relaxation. I may find the more I practice any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis the deeper in trance I will be able to go or the deeper into hypnosis I will be able to go. I may find the more I practice any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis the deeper relaxed I will be able to become or the deeper into hypnosis I will be able to go. I may find the deeper I relax the deeper into hypnosis I will go and the more deeper into hypnosis I go the more deeply I will relax. I may find that any other noises I hear just relax me even more or I may find any other noises I hear just take me into an even deeper hypnotic trance.

I may find whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I will find it easy to let go of conscious thoughts and just let my mind relax or I mind find my conscious mind just switches itself off. I may find I will find it easy to switch off My conscious mind. I may find that when I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I will switch of my conscious thoughts and let my subconscious listen or I may find I will let my subconscious mind listen and switch off my conscious thoughts. I may find the more deeply I relax the deeper into hypnosis I will go and the more deeper into hypnosis I go the deeper I will relax.

From now on whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I will find it easy to switch off my conscious mind and just let my subconscious mind listen. All conscious thoughts will just fade away. Whenever I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I have no need to consciously think of anything. I will find it easy to just let my conscious mind relax and stop all conscious thinking. I may find the more I try to consciously think the more I will be unable to do so or I may find my conscious mind automatically switches itself off.

As each day passes and the more I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I will find it easier and easier to go into a deep hypnotic trance. The more I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis the quicker I will be able to go onto a deep relaxing trance. The more I do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis the easier it will be for I will be able to go into deep relaxing trance.

From now on whenever I want to do any type of hypnosis or self hypnosis I will just say skeenalayor out loud to myself or in my mind. I will only be able to say or think skeenalayor when it is perfectly safe to do so. When I think or say skeenalayor my whole body and conscious mind will relax. All conscious thoughts will stop and my unconscious mind will listen. When I say or think skeenalayor I will immediately go into a deep relaxing hypnotic trance.

That was indeed a very long read, but better than leaving out important parts of the story.......the fact that you are analitical in my opinion is no bar to hypnosis. The amnesia you mention may perhaps have caused a problem, since you feel that you lost control during that time. I have no idea of course, and wouldn't unless I worked with you, and that is unlikely to happen since I am retired and live in Canada to boot. I do admire your persistance, but would like to know why it is that you try and try again, instead of looking elsewere? I can assure you that it is unlikely that you will be successful unless you are fortunate enough to meet someone whom you feel you can both respect and trust, again something that is not likely after one meeting such as in a pretalk situation. Sorry I can't offer some solution, but at a distance this is usually impossible to do with any accuracy.
