Sounds as if hypnotherapy would be very suitable for such a purpose.
I would advise you to visit hypnosis.com and ask for leads to a practitioner, since many who visit that board are located in various parts of the UK, and you may find someone willing to make a house call.

Hello All, It is important to understand that agraphobia is one of the most intense anxiety phobic attacks.
I have never known of a quick and easy hypnotic resolution.
Forty-five years ago, I had my first agaraphobic client. I made two house calls and she responded well to hypnosis and I gave her suggestions that she could ride in my car to my office for subsequent sessions and while she was hypnotized she agreed. I arrived at the home and she got into the back seat with husband and daughter on either side.I hypnotized her and started to pull away from the curb. She began crying out and as the car proceeded, she began screaming and was approaching a powerful hysteria. I decided to turn around and return to her home. She refused to have further sessions.

Now for a success story--Many years later, a recovered agarophic, took his hypnotherapy training with me and decided to focus his efforts on this problem. He learned of a very wealthy woman who had not been outside of her high-rise condo in Beverly Hills for sixteen years. He began to work with her (house calls) three times a week
for the first two months, made custom tapes for her, then twice a week sessions for another four months. Six months from the time he started with her, she went with him to the supermarket and shopped for groceries without a sign of emotioal upset. Two weeks later, she gave him a bonus check for fifteen thousand dollars He developed a tape program and manual for distance usage and wrote to Ann Landers
and she put it in her her newspaper column. In the next six months, he had eight thousand letters from sufferers who had read the column. He then wrote a book which was published but I'm certain it is out of print now. His name is Mel Green and back then he lived in Los Angeles.I do not recall the name of the book. I did a used book search by authors' name with no success. I did find a book in a shop in Canada on the subject of agarophia- contact me for the name
of the shop and book. With Respect, gilboyne5.com

Each issue of ENcourage Newsletter included articles written by both peers and treatment professionals including the experts and well-known authors in the field. Here you will find the complete text of some of our most popular articles.

"Support Person" Perspective - 1996
Written by the editor's husband: Over the years, I have been meaning to include an article in this newsletter which is published by my wife--from the perspective of a "support person." I have wanted to shed some light on this subject through my own experiences with my wife as her support person and through meeting so many others in similar situations.

Nutritional Causes of Anxiety and Panic Attacks - 1995
Because we have received a number of requests from our readers for information concerning nutrition as used in the treatment of anxiety, we bring you this article and viewpoint by a nutritional expert who is known to have treated a number of patients with anxiety disorders, including panic disorder.

Useful Guidelines For Helping The Recovering Agoraphobic In Your Life - 1994
Written by editor Pat Merrill: This following information has been compiled from a great variety of resources, containing the ideas and opinions of many experts in the treatment field. It is our hope that our agoraphobic readers can share this information with family members, co-workers, and/or friends that may be interested in understanding your condition and ways to assist you. (It is assumed that we are referring to agoraphobics who are actively pursuing recovery.)

How I Overcame Fear - 1995
We are pleased to share this article sent to us by Shirley Swede. Readers may be familiar with her most helpful book, The Panic Attack Recovery Book, which she co-wrote with Seymour Sheppard Jaffe, M.D

Dear Hal, you also posted the following on another board:

"what are most relaible methods of treating anxiety attacks ?
for someone who has panick attacks in situations of meeting strangers.
and an over awareness of people lookng at them, when they are not."

What you describe may be in fact Social Anxiety Disorder (formerly known as "Social Phobia") of the Generalized subtype. Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder can be extremely disabling and result in a person becoming housebound. Exactly like agoraphobia, but for different reasons.

Quite often, therapists, even medical doctors, who are not familiar with Social Anxiety Disorder, which has not been as well researched as agoraphobia, misdiagnose this disorder as agoraphobia or even, on occasions, as paranoia or avoidant personality disorder. The important thing to remember is that different types of treatment are indicated for agoraphobia and different ones for social anxiety disorder, so a correct diagnosis is crucial.

I will make the same suggestion to you that I did to Annabelle in another thread. Seek a properly qualified psychologist who specializes in phobias and anxiety disorders. Try to find one who is also trained in and practices hypnotherapy, as hypnosis will enhance tremendously the effects of the psychotherapy indicated (usually cognitive-behavioral therapy) for your specific problem.

I will repeat what I said to Annabelle and this is not just some kind of pep talk. Today there are well-tested psychological treatments that deal effectively with this type of disorders. All you need to do is seek the appropriate therapy provided by appropriate practitioners.

If you do the right thing, you can expect total relief and elimination of symptoms with confidence. Many people have found such relief and I'm sure you will too.

All the best.

Hal, it is always very useful to be as well informed as possible about the problems you're suffering from.

If you are interested in knowing more about your possible problem, you may read my, rather long, article entitled, "A Study of the Nature, Etiology and Treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder or Social Phobia", published online.

Go to http://www.unicollege-edu.net, click the link "Research Library" on the homepage, then, click "Psychology" and, then, the two links under the article title. The first link will take you to the abstact and contents and the second to the full text.

See if some of the descriptions in this article fit what you have been experiencing.

I don't think he has the problem - I believe he may be asking for one of his clients.

There are two similar terms that are often confused:

agoraphobia, Fear of open spaces.
agraphobia, Fear of sexual abuse.

The title of this thread has been changed to indicate the correct one.
