 Is 'Image Streaming' like self hypnosis?

I once tried a technique called 'Image Streaming' whilst I was at work. I just sat in my chair, closed my eyes, and asked myself, 'What do I see'. A picture popped into my minds eye. I went on to repeat 'What do I see next', after every picture. I looked at each picture for about five seconds each. I was doing this for about 40 minutes. A few colleagues came back into the office and just sat down to eat their sandwiches. I heard them talking up the corridor and stuff, but I just chose to carry on with what I was doing.

When I decided I wanted to open my eyes, I wasn't able to. (Resting your eyes was common in the office, due to heavy use of the computer). I couldn't open my eyes, move any muscle in my body. Nothing. It was if I was paralysed. I could hear everything going on, but couldn't move. When I did open my eyes, I jumped out of my skin so much, I fell off my chair. It was as if someone woke me up from a deep sleep.

Would this be a case of self-hypnosis? I would like to know because since then I have acquired Agoraphobia. I think that's what it is. As I can't feel confined, - like sitting in a train or barbars, etc. It really is a stupid phobia, but extremely limiting on what you can do.

I've been told by numerous hypnotists that I the most analytical person they have met and can't be hypnotised to the degree they require to help me.

It would be good to know if I was on the right track when I was doing this 'Image Streaming'. Was I really practicing self-hypnosis, as I haven't been able to do it since without falling to sleep.

Any help would be appreciated!!!

I would suggest that anyone with a phobia should face their fear with a friend, and stay in the phobic situation for at least an hour at a time, a couple of days a week. Facing your fear does work. I know. Do it by degrees though. Don't jump in at the deep end. And if you feel the pressure is too much, when you're facing your fear, you can always walk away. Just keep on trying. Never give up after the first attempt. It will get easier.

Alternatively, face it in your mind. As there's no difference between real and imagined. (That's if you can do self-hypnosis)

A facinating post I must say. As to if it was self hypnosis or not, there are many forms of self hypnosis, and this may well be one of them, but I do wonder at the rest of your post. You begin with an explanation of something that happened beyond your understanding, and then proceed to give advice as if you were an expert. Quite the change of character... What you seem to have done, is scare yourself silly, so that now you are unable to enter a trance state. Find some real loosers in the way of professional hypnotists who offered BS instead of admitting a lack of skills, and generally screw up so that you have to some extent lost a skill that may well have been very useful to you if developed properly... This is it seems a common problem these days, with people reading books, and thinking this makes them capable of practising hypnosis. Thank heavens the only one you affected adversely was yourself....

hi steve.. Image Streaming.. as win wager, states is not self hypnosis, as your not giving your self any suggestions.. your just going with the flow of memories, at pop in to mind, as you go through the process. it can create a very high alpha state, of mind, and thats where the deep relaxation comes from. "I have acquired Agoraphobia" cool how mush did you pay? and would you be willing to sell it to me? what would you need to do to acquired confidence, and a sense of freedom? how would that feel if it happened, with out yoiu having to go into trance? deep or other wise, if you could choose a better set of feeling what would you consider? how would that feel if just for a few seconds, you could feel at your best? and what would happen if you could feel this best self as at tera time one day next week? could you do that ? if so could you do it again say in a years time? only for a few seconds mind you,, a swe don't want tyou to push the boat out to fast, now do we.. now if you can do that in that time, and with out to much effort, what would you like to feel if you knew that you could choose any good set of feelings other than, the ones you have acquired? what would each good feeling feel like, sound like and look like, to you?

Think about lots and lots of good time that you have had, i you have had lots of good times, before, now, so you can pick the best ones, and better ones, and as you do this good thinking, you can consider this, as its in your best options to do so, if you could take just one of the many good feeling that you have been thinking about, and you could feel that and the time you feel a little tence or stressy, how would that feel if this good feeling just so happened to be there, when you needed it? caqn you think, about this good feeling? and again, now can you take this good feeling, and at time in your real past, lets say you felt this good feeling, in place of you not so good feeling? now its not real, so if you just play along, what would you think would be happening, if you have feeling at your best at them times? now what do you think could happen if you put this set of good feeling in to your future? and when ever you started to feel a little stressy, you just automatically started to feel your best good feeling, just try in your mind, say it five years from now and you do this each time , from now till then, and back again, each time getting a better and better sense of you good feeling. step into this memories and run it.. just a few times, make any and all adjustments that you need to make, in just the right ways, that work for you now.

remember to turn your not so good memories backwards, make them small black and white, and see them way over there, now as you do that ,, you can also think about all your good memories, and make them big and bright, and step into them.. and live with personal power that you have acquired, in just a few sort miniutes..

now a work on analytical your already in a trance, as you work that out, i will talk to your other than consicious mind, for a seconds, now i know you have done a good job, at looking after your owner, yet don't you think it might be a good time to relax, and light up just a little, this way you get to have lots more fun, and when your in the middle of this or that you can laugh at your self over there, just being happy, doing it in a new way, you can choose this way or that way, which ever way you choose you will choose the best way to feel good now, did you not, find that to easy. going good now.

Matrixman, I understand why you told the poster it wasn't self hypnosis knowing as we did, he hadn't given himself any suggestions, but remember, if he entered a trance state, which he did, he may well have picked up suggestions from the overheard conversations of his office buddies, thus concluding hypnosis of an unintended kind. Always be careful how you put a fence around that word, it can come back to bite you. As for the advice you gave him, I think I would have been a lot more circumspect knowing he had already done harm to himself by messing about with something he didn't understand. This is why I am so careful not to offer too much information to those who's skills are unknown to me. I don't want to be responsible for their screw ups. Either let them scew up without help, or visit a properly trained and skilled practitioner.
